Disco Juice 9 Essential tunes of the month
Michael Gray - You’re Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else

Michael Gray – You’re Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else

[Glitterbox Recordings]

Michael Gray is one of dance music’s true veterans who shows no sign of slowing down. Returning to Glitterbox with a tasty remake of the Philadelphia Records anthem ‘You’re Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else’, written by the legendary duo of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff & originally recorded by The Jone Girls.

Behind the turntables or in the studio Michael is more than capable of delivering and arguably this is one of Michaels releases to date, gloriously recalling those halcyon disco days but adding his trademark production, an end-of-night anthem that is as modern as it is uplifting.

You can check You’re Gonna Make Me Somebody Else on the mix below where it is the opening track.

Roy Ayers Hey Uh What You Say Come On Dave Lee Revibe

Roy Ayers – Hey Uh-What You Say Come On (Dave Lee Revibe)

[Disco Combine]

Disco protagonist & total legend Dave Lee is of course the given name of Joey Negro, Here he kicks off 2023 with a cheeky little side hustle, Disco Combine.

Conjuring up 2 lethal disco weapons is no easy take but Dave certainly delivered here with ‘Hey Uh-What You Say Come On’ (Dave Lee Revibe) & ‘Steal Your Heart’ (Dave Lee Showtime mix).

First up ‘Hey Uh-What You Say Come On’ is a big percussive workout with man Roy Ayers bells and xylophones over a romping groove. ‘Steal Your Heart’ (Dave Lee Showtime mix) reaches for the big Philly strings and sets them free over a more chunky and funky groove that gets right under your skin.

Phenomenal Handclap Band Burning Bridges

Phenomenal Handclap Band Burning Bridges – Remixes

[Razor-N-Tape]

NYC leftfield disco darlings Phenomenal Handclap Band made their first appearance on Razor-N-Tape by way of a collab with JKriv in 2022, and now they return for an offering all their own, the ‘Burning Bridges EP’.

The title track juxtaposes riffy guitar driven funk with plaintive vocals that smack of 1970s Heart in the best way, and Prins Thomas turns the tempo knob up a few clicks and launches into an extended interstellar excursion with his remix.

On the B side the cinematic slow burner ‘It Was The Summer’ begins sparse and hazy and builds to a driving peak of backbeat rhythm and an insistent vocal soliloquy.

Each Other (Justin Strauss & Max Pask) then take the tune straight to the rave with arpeggiated and acidic synths, recasting the haunting vocals as a modern New Wave anthem.

Coco Ben Good Feeling

Coco & Ben – Good Feeling

[AOTN]

Coco & Ben were a partnership between Benjamin Robinson of Ben And The Squeeze Tight Band and an uncredited singer (presumably the Coco of the title), who came together for one perfect and extremely rare single from 1979.

Now Athens Of The North have dusted down these two smooth as silk soulful disco jams and given them a fresh pressing.

‘Good Feelin’ is a mellow, soul-feeding cut for Sunday afternoon reveries and toe-tapping country drives alike. ‘See The World’ is a more sultry affair for those who like their grooves to dig in a little deeper.
