Getting to Know: Two Goats in a Canoe | Interviews

Hey! What inspires your sound to create ‘Two Goats in a Canoe’?

We want to inspire people through our music as a band. We have always said that. Our lyrics may have been inspired by darker times but they are testament to a belief that however dark things may seem we have to believe in brighter times, the light must find us.  We want to share that light, through our music. The only person stopping you being whatever you want to be is YOU. Chase your dreams. This is our dream to make music and share it in the hope of connecting with people and uplifting and inspiring.  It’s also a massive privilege and we intend to keep fighting against the darkness and bringing our audiences some light Goats style.

There’s a real 70s feeling to your music, is this era of music an influence for you?

I grew up in the Highlands of Scotland on a small Croft in the seventies, with limited access to music let alone live music. I was raised on Barbara Dickson, Crystal Gayle, The New Seekers and many others. In the eighties I was a New Romantic for my sins, white trousers and tucker boots are a tough look to pull off when you live on a farm.  Our music is probably heavily influenced by this era.

What is your new single ‘Jericho’ about?

Jericho is an imaginary club “well it is in my head “. I’m sure there is a club somewhere called Jericho, and hopefully one day I might find it.  It was inspired by the feeling you get when you’re walking home on a Sunday morning, after a brilliant night, that feeling of euphoria. We all want the world to disappear and when I’m with you all I can see is you. When the world becomes too much, I will be in Jericho waiting for you.

What is your writing process like?

I write the songs and all the lyrics they come from life experiences. I usually find a chord structure then play about with some lyrics, then when I feel I have something I like I then take it to the band and they say whether they like it or and and we work on arranging it.

You’ve described tour music as #PainPop, what do you feel this means?

We write about real life and it’s not always pretty as life can be.  When you can’t say the words SING that’s always been our philosophy, set these lyrics to a pop beat and it’s not a sad song it’s uplifting and inspiring we want to inspire. We are five lost souls singing to all the other lost souls in the hope of connecting and letting them know they are not alone.

What’s next for you in 2023?

We will be releasing new material early in 2023, We have much more material to release and much more to say, we will be releasing new material in early 2023. We are currently gigging and hoping to do some festivals next year. Life is short and moments must be grasped we in to to grab ours. And so should you.
