GETTING TO KNOW: Knife Girl | Interviews

After a frenzy of EPs and singles under her belt over the last few years, fast-rising artist Knife Girl has now announced her plans for her long-awaited debut album ‘Uniform’, showcased by the new single ‘The Good Times Are Coming Your Way’.

With its bright and vibrant flavour layered throughout, ‘The Good Times Are Coming Your Way’ is a true joy to listen to. Jam-packed with bold and toe-tapping hooks from start to finish, be prepared to have this one stuck in your head long after you’ve first heard it.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with her to discuss her origins and influences over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

My sister took piano lessons when I was a little kid. I really wanted to be like my sister, so I bugged my parents to let me take piano lessons too. Those piano lessons definitely helped me get started with creating music.

What was the first band or artist you enjoyed when you were younger?

I really liked Lady Gaga… and the High School Musical soundtrack.

What was the first album you remember owning?

I think the first time I got a physical album for myself was when my parents bought me Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories on vinyl as a present for graduating middle school.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

When I heard Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales by Car Seat Headrest, I thought my exact thought was “Damn, I wish I’d written this song”.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

The new Black Midi album is amazing. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Charli XCX.

If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?

Those moments right after finishing a live gig. I’m always exhausted, but it’s super rewarding and inspiring. I wish I could get that feeling wrapped up in plastic, so I could feel it when I’m down.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

David Byrne is a huge inspiration to me, just shaking his hand would be an honor.

And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?

I really, really would love to work with Charli XCX some day. She inspires me so much.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

I always write music for myself first and foremost, but hearing from listeners that my music has been relatable or helpful to them feels great. It makes me feel like all of this is worth it.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

We talked about musical influences once with my dad. I was worried that maybe my influences are too obvious in my music and maybe I’m not original enough. He made this point that, when you’ve got an audience of people listening to your music live, they’re there to have a good time. If the music is good, people are gonna enjoy it. Most likely, no one is over-analysing what you’re playing. What my dad said resonated with me. I’ve taken that advice to heart.

Knife Girl’s new single ‘The Good Times Are Coming Your Way’ is available to stream now, with the new studio album ‘Uniform’ out on the 23rd September 2022 via Soliti/Playground.
